The Maldives may become another country to completely ban gambling. A law criminalizing gambling has been passed by the country’s parliament.
All 50 members of the local parliament present voted in favor of the initiative. The new amendments to the Maldives Criminal Code apply to both participants and organizers and managers of gambling establishments. For violations of the rules, it was proposed to establish a punishment in the form of imprisonment for up to four years.
The list of prohibitions includes, in particular, online gambling. At the same time, entertainment or sports tournaments will not be subject to restrictions. Even if they offer cash or valuable prizes.
It should be noted that all forms of gambling are prohibited by law in the Maldives. This is due to the influence of Islamic law on the country. However, there was no criminal liability for violating these rules.
